Let’s face it--everyone has their favorite game. The one you got for Christmas, that you played for 10 years straight and have still never been able to beat the campaign! You know that game, the one you would by an action figure for, because you use to spend all your time playing it without going anywhere. My question is what happened to them? I remember back in the day when everyone owned one console or another (Or you were like me and went to all your friends’ houses to play) and there was a point to going to some ones how, because you could play with them.
The games back then were so simple, easy, yet fun; and everyone had their game. Some people grew up on the Nintendo; they played Mario, and Sonic. On the other hand you had the PlayStation players who played all the titles for PlayStation like Crash, Ratchet and Clank, Spyro…
The other day I was discussing with some friends “our” games and I realized something. All of these games were super childish, yet we loved them then, and we still love them now. We look at the new polished versions of that game and we think “Ugh, this is horrible.”
For example, let’s look at Pokémon; I probably logged hundreds of hours playing Emerald on my DS, yet I still love the franchise and that game. When I look back on it I did the same thing over and over again--took my Blaziken out and hit stuff with it. What happened to us? Now those same Pokémon-grinding-masters play games like WoW, and they complain when they don’t have heirlooms or refer a friend to get them to max.
In these games I thought grinding was part of the fun, yet even I notice that grinding isn’t the same. I even feel that way about Runescape; I use to be able to sit there for hours and just mine, but now after like 10 minutes I’m just bored.
My question is what happened to all us gamers who use to be able to play one game, or do one task in a game for hours, that we can't do that now? More and more it seems content in games is more streamline, as in faster questing, more experience, and easier ways to achieve money.
Please leave comment of what you think of all this grinding, and share some of your fond game experiences! =)
